“My name is Sarah. My husband died a few years ago, leaving me to look after our six children and my ageing mother. I was overwhelmed in every element of my life; financially, I was struggling as the only one bringing in any money from my maize business, and emotionally, I was grieving. Because of how I was feeling, I used my children as punching bags. I would hit them with a large stick that I kept in the corner of my room. I would hurt them even if they had done nothing wrong, not realizing that they were also mourning their father.

According to UNICEF (n.d), only 1 out of every 4 Ugandans, begins and completes their secondary education. Six out of ten of these Ugandans do not finish their secondary education due to costs associated with education. Godfrey, 22, is one of the several Ugandans who make up this statistic. He is now a peer mentor of an out-of-school youth club in Luweero, Central Uganda overseen by the Luweero VAC Cluster and supported by Children’s Rights and Violence Prevention Fund’s, Prevention of Violence Against Children & Young People (PVAC) grant. Mayimunah’s Fight for Safe Schools

Recently, we had the privilege of speaking with Mayimunah, the secretary of the Brilliant Club at a primary school in Mukono, Uganda. This student-led club operates under the guidance of focal teachers who facilitate the “good schools” intervention as part of Children’s Rights and Violence Prevention Fund’s, (CRVPF) Prevention of Violence Against Children and Young People program (PVAC). The intervention’s primary goal is to cultivate safe school environments that are free from violence and allow a child to begin and complete their education. Breaking the Cycle: One Parent’s Mission to Prevent Violence in Homes

Recently, we sat down with Harriet, a dedicated Community-Based Facilitator (CBF) deeply involved in facilitating weekly parenting meetings. These meetings which are a violence-preventative strategy under Children’s Rights and Violence Prevention Fund’s (CRVPF), Prevention of Violence against Children and Young People (PVAC) program, aim to enhance parental skills and cultivate healthier spousal relations.
In our conversation, Harriet shared her remarkable journey as a CBF in Nagojje, Mukono, Uganda. She painted a vivid picture of the impact she’s witnessed, not only on the parents she serves but also on her own approach to parenting. Sylvia, a 23-year-old mother living in Mukono district, Uganda, faced a difficult situation when she had to leave secondary school due to financial constraints. Without completing her high school education, Sylvia faced limited job prospects yet still needed to earn a living. “I began working in Mabira Forest, where I was planting trees. The job was physically exhausting, and my bosses weren’t kind. However, I continued working because I wasn’t in school and I needed the money.” Enduring harsh conditions, Sylvia persevered in her determination to provide for herself and her family.

Arise Katabalanga Foundation was established in 2017 as a community-based organization (CBO) with a primary focus on child protection in Katabalanga ward, Mubende, Uganda.
